Tip for Buying Food Storage in Bulk

Do you buy your Food Storage in bulk sometimes? I do for a couple of reasons: it is less expensive to buy in bulk for items that I go through on a regular basis, I don't love canning food or mylar bagging it (though I have done it and it works out great), but I would rather just open my 25 or 50 pound bag, dump, seal, and put away! Yes, some may call this lazy, and I am so not offended if this is what you think. It is just easier for me to do bulk.
Anyway, on to the tip for buying in bulk:
Store your bulk food in a food grade bucket. Such as a 5 gallon or 6 gallon bucket. Then I like to use Gamma Lids. But you only need one Gamma Lid per product. And they come in several different colors so you can even *color coordinate your food! For example, you may have five buckets of wheat. Get one gamma lid for the current bucket of wheat you are working with and then the other four buckets you can seal tightly shut with the lid that comes with it. When you run out of wheat in your "currently using" bucket you will just dump wheat into that one from your "other four buckets" and you will never have to replace the gamma lid.

The left lid is a gamma lid. Once you seal the outside ring, the actual lid part twists easily on and's amazing!
(*Online the white gamma lid is sold, color variations are available in a Retail Store)

Also, here is a chart to help you know how much food will fit into your bucket:

Easy Lemon Blueberry Mini Loaves Recipe

The other day I got this crazy idea to cross breed Honeyville Lemon Poppy Seed Muffin Mix with Honeyville Wild Blueberry Muffin Mix: and lo and behold Lemon Blueberry Mini Loaves were born! The short story even shorter is, I used the mix from the Lemon Poppy Seed Muffin and the Blueberries from the Blueberry Muffin box.  Easy right?!?!

Baking Tip

Today I want to share one of the best baking tips I got from Lisa Barker, the Salt Lake Store Manager.

When letting bread dough rise, put it in the microwave.  There you don't have to worry about any drafts, if it is too hot/cold, etc.  Don't turn the microwave on but let it sit in there and do its thing.

Genius right?  You wouldn't think something as simple as putting your dough in a controlled area would make that much difference but it does!  Because there isn't anything interfering with the process the dough should be ready to go sooner.  I'll do anything that gets me fresh homemade bread quicker!

I'd love to hear some of your tips and tricks to baking or cooking you've picked up.

Happy Baking!

The Perfect Baked Hash Browns Recipe

Honeyville's Dehydrated Potato Dices are fantastic! I love them in soups, pot pies, and as hash browns! The most recent recipe that I tried was Baked Hash Browns. The perfect side to some scrambled eggs!

1/2 cup Honeyville Freeze Dried Peppers
1/2 cup Honeyville Freeze Dried Mushrooms
Seasoning Salt to taste
1 Tbsp. Butter-melted
2 tsp. Olive Oil

Re-hydrate all the vegetables according to package instructions.  Drain well.  Put all ingredients in a baking dish, mix thoroughly, and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

Smooth Salsa Recipe

Growing up there was a great little Mexican restaurant in my town with the best salsa.  It is super duper good.  So super good that there may have been requests given to people that as they drive by on their way home to pick up an order of chips and salsa.  We might be having spaghetti for dinner but in my family we can eat chips and salsa anytime! I've moved and so has the restaurant but I used the new Honeyville Freeze Dried Onions to come up with a salsa that comes awfully close to my hometown favorite!

Disguising Food Storage-Replacing Oils with Beans in Baked Goods

We've mentioned on here before that oils can be replaced with bean puree in baked goods. Beans in dessert?!?!  YES please!  It is recommended that we eat 3 cups of beans per week.  I figure if I can incorporate some of those beans into dessert all the better! The only difference I could tell was that it seemed to make the end results more cake-like.  It wasn't a bad thing just slightly different.

The first I made Honeyville's Fudge Brownie Mix and added drops of Honeyville's Chocolate Chip Cookie dough into the pan and baked it...and then after it had cooled topped it with a Chocolate Ganache.  Since I made them with beans I figured I could splurge on the top!

Tasty Rice Pudding with Parboiled Rice Recipe

My hubby loves rice pudding. Frankly, just the thought of rice and milk together  for the longest time made me turn my head and not even try it. I have tried it, it was okay, I could swallow it, but I couldn't say that I liked it. I am not sure if it is because I am getting older and wiser (ha, ha!) or if my taste buds are changing, but I can say that I do like rice pudding. It doesn't make my 10 favorite foods, but I can sit down and eat a bowl and enjoy it. So here is our Rice Pudding Recipe using Parboiled Rice. And you know what, I LOVE Parboiled Rice! I like how it tastes, I like how it looks, and I LOVE the nutritional value on it!
